BooksToRead Review

The Shining is the classic horror story by Stephen King about a fired teacher by the name of Jack Torrance. Jack spends a winter with his family in a spooky mountain hotel, where he works as a caretaker. Mysterious things seem to be happening everywhere in the hotel. The son of the teacher, the five-year-old Danny Torrance, possesses a special gift, 'the shining', that makes him experience lifelike and frightening visions. In the Overlook Hotel Danny's visions really take on terrifying forms. Violent snowstorms isolate the hotel completely from the outside world. In the meantime, the behavior of Jack Torrance becomes ever more strange and deluded. Until he finally decides it would be a good idea to kill his own family with an ax. The Shining is one of the best Stephen King novels, next to other horror books such as The Stand, Salem's Lot and It. It's a really frightening story that is difficult to put away once you start reading. Horror of the best kind from the master of horror himself. The new sequel to the Shining is Doctor Sleep.

Book description

Jack Torrance’s new job at the Overlook Hotel is the perfect chance for a fresh start. As the off-season caretaker at the atmospheric old hotel, he’ll have plenty of time to spend reconnecting with his family and working on his writing. But as the harsh winter weather sets in, the idyllic location feels ever more remote . . . and more sinister. And the only one to notice the strange and terrible forces gathering around the Overlook is Danny Torrance, a uniquely gifted five-year-old.
