The Talisman: A Novel
The Talisman is a somewhat lesser known fantasy book of the famous horror writer Stephen King, which he wrote in collaboration with the author Peter Straub. It is fantasy set in our current time, but in which a parallel universe of fantasy and magic exists, called the Territories. The 12-year-old Jack Sawyer leaves in New Hampshire in the United States on a quest for a Crystal 'the Talisman' to save his mother who is dying from cancer. His journey leads him alternately through America and the Territories. Characters from the Territories have a counterpart in our own world and are able to 'flip', that is, to switch to their character from here to there and vice versa. On his journey Jack is assisted by different people and magical creatures, including werewolves from the Territories. One of them in particular, Wolf, will become the travel companion for Jack, who will eventually have to face the confrontation with his uncle Morgan Jack Sloan, the former business partner of his late father, who also wants to get the Talisman in his hands so he can rule over the Territories.
Although the Talisman is about a twelve year old boy, it is not a book that is necessarily suitable for very young readers. It's actually fantasy for adults. Stephen King is not a typical fantasy writer, but the Talisman can certainly compete with many other books in the genre and is a must read for lovers of fantasy books. There is also a sequel to the Talisman called Black House. Another fantasy novel by Stephen King is the even better fantasy book The Stand. Even more renowned is his Gunslinger fantasy book series.
Why had twelve-year-old Jack Sawyer’s mother frantically moved the two of them from Rodeo Drive to a New York City apartment to the Alhambra, a fading ocean resort and shuttered amusement park in New Hampshire? Who or what is she running from? She is dying . . . and even young Jack knows she can’t outrun death. But only he can save her—for he has been chosen to search for a prize across an epic landscape of dangers and lies, a realm of innocents and monsters, where everything Jack loves is on the line.
